IMPORTANT!!!!! IMPORTANT!!!! IMPORTANT!!!! IMPORTANT!!!
Two public meetings have been scheduled for the proposed rail trail project in Johnson, Magoffin and Breathitt Counties by the Big Sandy Area Development District.
This project is frequently referred to as the Dawkins. It starts at Evanston in Breathitt County, runs south of Salyersville in Magoffin County and ends at West Van Lear in Johnson County near Paintsville. The railway right of way is owned by R.J. Corman and has been rail banked. The length is 36 miles. More information about the trail can be found in the January and April 2005 newsletters , vol 8. no 1 & 2. http://www.kyrailtrail.org/news.php
The first meeting is Wednesday, Nov 14th at 6:30 p.m. at the Paintsville Recreation Center in Paintsville. Paintsville is off of KY 460 that connects to the Mountain Parkway at Salyersville. Paintsville is 116 miles east of Lexington
The second meeting is Thursday, Nov 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Magoffin County at the Lloyd M. Hall Community Center in Salyersville. Salyersville is at the end of the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway and 99 miles from Lexington.
We need as many supporters as we can get at these 2 meetings. This is a long distance to travel for many but it would be important to have supporters of the trail at these meetings. It would be important to have representatives of cyclists, horseback riders, walkers, runners and hikers to show the diverse uses of the trail. If you know anyone in the area please contact them and let them know about the meetings. The organizers are expecting a large turnout of people opposed to the project.
Carpools can be organized. If you would like a ride or are willing to drive a vehicle from your area please contact dixiemoore@insightbb.com who will work to match up riders and drivers. _________________ Posted by Dixie Moore, Secretary KRTC |
