Contains albums of the Lexington to Ashland bicyle relays from 2005,2006,2007 and 2008. The relays were held to promote the building of the Lexington Big Sandy Railtrail and other multi use trails in the state. The relay distance is usually about 128 miles on county roads that paralleled the 109 miles of abandoned CSX right of way that goes from Lexington through Winchester, Mt. Sterling, Morehead and Olive Hill and then to Princess in Boyd County outside of Ashland.

This project is a 2.8 mile corridor owned by Norfolk Southern that goes from Lawrenceburg near the glass recyling plant to the Wild Turkey distillery and includes Young's High Bridge across the Kentucky River. The unique and historic Bennett H. Young Bridge would be tallest rail trial bridge in the nation. The bridge is 1659 feet in length, 283 feet above the low water mark and has a 551 ft. long cantilevered span. The bridge and corridor is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The corridor is currently railbanked. More information in vol 7, no 1, January 2004 Trail Time, http://www.kyrailtrail.org/news.php.

CSX has filed with the STB to abandon a 13 mile line in Harlan & Letcher Counties. There has been some interest by the tourism folks in Harlan County. What could make this an ideal project is that it links with one of KYTC's designated (on-road) bicycle routes, it ties in very close to the Kingdom Come State Park and begins within the town of Cumberland. The line on the map that we are referring to is green and then turns to blue as it heads northeast. This would be a great extension of the park for people to recreate anywhere from a mile to 26 miles. Imagine the first Kingdom Come Marathon.....
The STB Docket Number is AB55-Sub665X.
