The nine mile trail runs from the park headquarters to the park boundary over much of the old Mammoth Cave Railroad and then connects to the one mile Park City bike trail and ends at historic Bell's Tavern. Surface is crushed gravel. The Mammoth Cave Railroad carried passengers and freight between the main L&N line at Park City, Kentucky and Mammoth Cave from the 1880s until about 1930. About 40% of the grade was obliterated by highway construction in the 1960s. Engine #4 and a combination coach are displayed at the original terminus. Funding provided by the National Park Service and a grant from the National park Concessions. Volunteers did the ground work of trimming and making a wide path.

The residents of Camp Springs plan to build a 30-mile trail for bicycling, walking, and jogging. It will connect Camp Springs with Silver Grove and Melbourne. Camp Springs is in northern Campbell County about 3.5 miles from the Ohio River, and 15 miles from downtown Cincinnati. It is one of the very few undeveloped parts of Campbell County, and the residents are strongly committed to keeping their rural community rural. The trail will give them easy access to a safe place to exercise, recreate, and possibly, commute.

The first annual Magoffin County Redbud Horseback Ride was held at the farm of Mark Minix on Saturday, April 19,2008 on the Right Fork of the Oakley. The ride was organized by local horseback riders to show the feasibility of using the railroad corridor being abandoned by R.J. Corman in Breathitt, Johnson and Magoffin Counties to create the Big Lovely Mountain Trail as a multi use non motorized trail. By all accounts, the ride went extremely well with over 100 riders in attendance.

On July 22/2006 45 cyclists participated in the Cycling Relay from Winchester to Rush on county roads along the old CSX corridor. The relay is 130 miles and followed county roads closest to the corridor and in a few places was on the 105 mile long abandoned corridor. The ride start was changed to Winchester at 9:30 AM instead of from Lexington because of rain at 8 AM. Three riders did ride from Lexington to Winchester. The riders on the first leg were asked to turn back a third of the way between Winchester and Mt. Sterling because of heavy rain, however three riders chose to go on to Mt.Sterling to complete the leg; two because they had left their vehicles in Mt. Sterling and had to get to them. It cleared up almost as soon as the first group started to head back and we have clear but cloudly weather the rest of the way. The relay made it to Rush by 7 pm. The relay had two incidents, one flat tire and one rider had to take the ditch due to inconsiderate driving. The relay was planned to meet up with the Eastern Hill Saddle Club St. Jude Ride along the old corridor east of Olive Hill. The proposed railtrail would be capable of being used by bicycles, horses and walkers. Thanks to the riders and all the support people.

The Kentucky Rails to Trails Council hosted a bicycle relay ride from Lexington to Ashland as a National Trail Day Activity on June 11, 2005. The purpose of the ride was to promote the development of the abandoned CSX railway between Lexington and Ashland into a continuous railtrail. The relay started at the Pleasant Ridge Park in Fayette County (approximate mile post 637.1) and ended at mile post 532.8 in Rush, one mile from the Boyd County line. The distance over the railroad corridor is 105 miles. The estimated distance of the cycling relay over nearby county and state roads was 130 miles. 30 riders took part as well as an equal number of support people. Local ham radio clubs provided coverage for most of the ride. The relay was done at an average pace of 15-17 mph on paved roads and 12 mph in eastern Carter County where sections of road closest to the corridor are unpaved. The first riders left Lexington at 8:00 AM. and the last riders arrived in Rush at 7: 15 PM. The first 2/3s of the ride was done in intermittent drizzle and light rain. Thanks to all who may the ride safe and a success.

Two public meetings were held on 11/14/2007 and 11/15/2007 at the Recreation Center in Paintsville and at the Lloyd M. Hall Community Center in Saylersville. The Big Sandy Area Development District held the meetings to give information and to get public input on the proposed rail trail project along the Dawkins Line in Johnson, Magoffin and Breathitt Counties. Several RT supporters from the cycling, hiking and horseback riding community attended the meetings. Information was provided, many questions were asked and opinions both for and against the creation the trail were expressed. The 36 mile ROW owned by R.J. Corman that is railbanked starts at Evanston in Breathitt County, runs south of Salyersville in Magoffin County and ends at West Van Lear in Johnson County near Paintsville. More information about the trail can be found in the January and April 2005 newsletters , vol 8. no 1 & 2. http://www.kyrailtrail.org/news.php.

This is commonly called the River Corridor Bikeway; 22.6 miles in length. It is not a rail-trail, but an inner city bikeway along a waterway. I first rode this in 2000 and was pleasantly surprised. It has hardly any elevation changes, and very few routes on roadways.I took these pictures in early November 2005 and May 2006.

March 2007. These three trails make up an 11 mile triangle loop in Piqua, OH, 30 miles north of Dayton. The Linear Park section goes East-West 5.5 miles; 2.3 miles into Downtown, and another 3.2 miles, past French Park and the Hydraulic Canal Path, to its West terminus. The Hydraulic Canal Path goes along a former man-made canal, with remains of its locks. The Rivers Edge Section starts under the Downtown bridge over the Great Miami River and heads Northwest along the river.
