BRTF's mission is the development of a portion
of the trail that covers portions of Fayette and all of
Clark and Montgomery counties. This project is also called
the Lexington Big Sandy Rail.
Background
The
Bluegrass Rails to Trails Foundation (BRTF) has as its mission
the development of the portion of the trail that covers portions
of Fayette and all of Clark and Montgomery counties. This project
is also called the Lexington
Big Sandy Rail Trail.
BRTF is a non-profit grass roots foundation organized to serve as a catalyst to transform abandoned rail corridors in Fayette, Clark and Montgomery counties into useful recreational, non-motorized trails. Through our efforts, we hope to secure support from city and county officials, local organizations, community leaders, members of the communities, landowners and the state to build an approximately 39 mile continuous trail through Fayette, Clark and Montgomery counties on abandoned rail corridors. We realize some areas will have to be re-routed due to structures on the corridor, however, in most areas, the corridor is not being used for any purpose at this time.
Meetings are currently held quarterly in Jan., April, July and Oct. Meeting location alternates between Fayette and Clark counties. Meeting notices are sent via the KRTC list serve. Follow this link to view BRTF meeting minutes. For further meeting or chapter information, contact Robin Reams. Send Robin e-mail or call 859-986-0692. A membership
application is available here for your convenience.
History
The
C & O Railroad
completed 109 miles of rail line connecting Lexington and Coalton
Kentucky in 1881. It was not until 1985 that the C & O Railroad
abandoned this line.
The Kentucky
Rails to Trails Council was organized in 1994 and incorporated in 1995.
In 1996 the KRTC put
together a strategy for the development of the Lexington Big Sandy Rail
Trail.
In 1997, the Lexington
Fayette Urban County Government purchased for $30,000 the ROW to nearly
one mile privately owned rail bed between Man O\'War Blvd. and I-75 in Fayette
county. In the same year the Bluegrass Rails to Trails Foundation (BRTF)
was organized. BRTF was incorporated in 1998. The foundation
has been working toward trail development since that time.
